Final Week

Just a few notes for our final week of school-

First of all, we are almost done with all of our subject areas here at school.  If there was any late work, I asked for it last week and yesterday.  If it has not been turned in, I am sorry, but it is too late.

This week, we will be working on cleaning our room and getting it ready for the summer.  We will also be cleaning out desks starting this afternoon.  Please be sure to have a bag here at school so you can haul your things home!

This year, REPORT CARDS WILL BE MAILED.  You should receive them next week.  I will send home DQ envelopes today.

The FINAL CHAPEL SERVICE will be held at 8:30 am on Friday, May 25th

AWARDS DAY is on Friday, May 25th starting at 12:30 pm

GRADUATION is Friday night, May 25th at 7:00 pm

Three more days, then we are out for the summer!

Create your own Volcano

Directions
These are the basic Materials:
Bottle, can be Snapple, plastic soda, just about any size
A Cardboard box
Scissors, Tape,
A Plastic bag

First Lets Make the Volcano Shell
Start out with your box and your bottle. Use a corrugated box because it is nice and strong. Just about any bottle will do, plastic or glass. Cut the box to make a base, place the bottle on the base (this can be done however you think will work best) Cut a hole out under the bottle. This will be so you can easily take the bottle out for cleaning and reuse of the volcano.  Now cover the bottle with a bag. This will keep the plaster or dough from adhering to it. Makes it much easier to get in and out.  Now make your volcano shape using strips of cardboard from the excess parts of the box that you cut away. Tape them together, glue them, staple them. Do whatever is comfortable and easy for you.  Stuff the frame with crumpled up pieces of paper or newspaper. This will give it strength.

Make the Volcano Shell
This is an easy method that uses materials around the house. In a bowl mix six cups of flour, two cups of salt, four tablespoons of cooking oil and two cups of water. You mix this up real well and it comes out a nice doughy material which will be perfect for your volcano shell. You can tinker with the ingredients a bit to get a consistency you are comfortable working with. Typically its good to add a little more water as you see fit. You then apply this dough to the diorama shell and let it dry. With this method you can also bypass the whole frame method that was on the previous pages. Just make sure you put a plastic bag over your bottle so it will be easy to remove.

You can also add some paint or food coloring to the dough if you want it to have a nice volcano like color. Or you can leave in natural so you can paint it later.

The volcano needs to be painted!
Take your time and exercise some artistic skills. (You can paint some red around the mouth of the volcano -This is called the crater- and run some red lines down the side. It makes a good effect.) Also add some little details like small trees and grass.

Now for the Ingredients for Making this Volcano Erupt
1. Take the bottle out of the volcano and fill it almost full with water
2. put 4 or 5 drops of detergent right into the water
3. Add Two Tablespoons of Baking Soda to the water
4. Put the Volcano over the bottle so it is in place and ready to go
5. Pour some vinegar right into the volcano bottle and watch it Erupt!!

PLEASE NOTE: If we get the materials, and we have the time, we can do this in class.  We talked today about bringing some of the things we would need to school.  Basic supplies needed would be- flour, salt, and vinegar.  The rest we could probably "scrounge" from around here.

Field Trip Friday, May 11th

Jackson-Washington State Forest

Trail 1 - Rugged 1.0 mile
Starts at the CCC picnic/playground area and runs northeast to the old observation tower. From there, it turns north, and joins Trail 10 for a short distance, then angles off again. The last 1/4 mile traverses a steep slope to a scenic vista. Hiking legs and water are recommended. Take your time and enjoy the view! Allow 1 hour hiking time

We will be leaving school around 9:00 a.m.  Parents who are attending can meet us in our classroom at 8:50ish.

After we arrive at the park, we will be hiking to Pinnacle Peak and back, which is a trail that is about 2 miles long.

When we complete our hike, we will eat lunch.  We will be eating Snappy Tomato Pizza

Please remember-
·        Dress appropriately for the weather and for the hike.  Be sure to have shoes that you are able to walk in, as the trail will take 1 ½ - 2 hrs to complete.
·        You should bring a drink or two.  I would recommend water, but Gatorade or similar drink would be fine.  Please don’t bring any pop.

After we finish lunch, we will play a game at the park, or we may hike another short trail.

We will return to school between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. on that day.  Parents who are attending can then return home and we will do a few short activities in the afternoon and possibly watch a movie!
