Prayer

"Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." James 5: 13-16

I have been thinking a lot about prayer recently. I confess that prayer is one of those things that I have trouble with from time to time. What should I say? How should I say it? How long should I say it for? Sometimes, it is hard to pray in front of other people, but sometimes it is just as hard to pray alone when no one is listening.

Every morning, 4th grade has devotions. At the end of each devotion, the kids lead a prayer and we go through our long list of requests and name each person that members of our class have placed on our prayer list. A lot of times, the prayer is the most nerve-racking part about the devotions. The students are not sure what to say or how to say it, and I always tell them that it does not matter. God hears our prayers, no matter what.

These verses remind us how powerful prayer can be. We don't always get the answers we want, but we always get answers in God's time. Recently, we have been reminded how powerful prayer can be, as some of them have been answered and people who could have been gravely ill are now getting better. Praise God for that! We need to remember to go to God in prayer in all circumstances in our life, good and bad, and you will notice that these verses do not say, "If you sound good, God will answer, but if you don't..." They instead tell us that if you are troubled, ask for help, if you are sick, ask for healing, if you are happy, sing songs of praise. God will hear them, no matter what they sound like.

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

1. Help session is every Tuesday and Thursday after school– if you received a D or F on your Grade Review you are required to attend.

2. We are still in need of more paper towels here in our classroom– we have a hamster cage that seems to be using up a lot of them! If you could donate a roll or two, just send them in. Thank you!

3. Spelling is Lesson 18– a review Lesson– the 25 words to the right are the words we are using. Another note about Spelling: You may have already noticed, but the Spelling Tests are going to be the major portion of the Spelling grades for the rest of the school year. As we discussed at the beginning of the year, the Spelling homework assignments are becoming less important, and the tests themselves are going to be what most of the grade is based upon.

4. Note about test corrections: As we move forward, there will be less opportunities for the students to take home their tests to correct (if they received a poor grade). They will still be allowed to correct the tests, but they will have to do them here at school when they do. At some point, the opportunity to correct tests will no longer be an option.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas break as much as I am! We have been spending a lot of time with family over the past few weeks, and it has been very good to see them.

I wanted to spend a minute to say "THANK YOU" to all of you- fourth graders and parents- for your wonderful Christmas gifts. I enjoyed all of them... I have been using the mugs already, and the gift cards came in very handy as we traveled to see family last week. AND, you should all know, I have been keeping an eye on those Hoosiers, and even though they are no longer undefeated, you may yet talk me into being an IU fan.

Anyway, thank you all very much!

I received this devotion from my dad this morning via email- thought I would share it with you...

A Bad Influence

(Jesus said) "No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light." Luke 8:16

This devotion is about Tim Tebow.

For those of you who don't know the name, let me explain. In college Tim Tebow won the super-prestigious Heisman Trophy for having lead his team to two national college championships. Right now Tebow is in his second year playing football with the Denver Broncos.

But there's more that you should know about Tim Tebow. He spends his off time visiting sick kids in hospitals; he visits his father's mission in the Philippines, and he says that sex is something for marriage. You know, there was a time in this country when that kind of person would become a hands-down hero for the young, a model worthy of everyone's emulation.

Yes, there was a time, but that time is not 21st-century America. You see, Tim Tebow is a Christian, and he is being singled out for hatred because he is a follower of the Savior.

And if you think "hatred" is too strong a word, I can tell you there is a Facebook page called "I Hate Tim Tebow." There is a website called Tebow-Haters.com. One comedian jokes that "If he had a gun with one bullet and Osama bin Laden and Tim Tebow were in the same room, he'd shoot bin Laden. But if he had two bullets, he'd shoot Tim Tebow first."

And if you were to ask the folks who dislike Tebow so much, they would tell you it's because he doesn't keep his faith hidden. And while he is not pushy with his faith, he's not apologetic for it either. It is Tebow's public witness, his refusal to be a beer-guzzling, skirt-chasing, drug-popping, marriage vow-breaking party animal, which makes him stand out in the public arena.

Now I'm not a Broncos' fan, and I don't follow Tebow with any kind of a religious fervor. Even so, I believe all of us have an interest in seeing this young man continuing with his witness.

You see, if the scoffers can silence a public Christian like Tim Tebow, they will have no hesitation tackling other, lesser individuals. If they can stop his witness, no high-school athlete would object when coach called for a practice during church time; no college student or store clerk would risk making a confession of faith lest they jeopardize their chances for advancement.

And just as bad, those generations who come after us will have second-string, second-rate heroes and few Christian success stories after which they can pattern their lives. Like I said, I'm not a Bronco fan, but I'm willing to cheer for any Christian who lets the world know he isn't ashamed to follow the Savior who lived, died and rose to save us from our sins.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, in every generation You have raised up men and women of faith who powerfully proclaimed the Savior who rescued them from their sins. Now we pray that You will, in our time, give us men and women who -- with Christ in their hearts -- will set an example worthy of being followed. This I pray in my Savior's Name. Amen.

I was sitting at my computer this morning, trying to get up the motivation to do some things that need to be done before the students arrive at school, and I was having a hard time getting myself moving. So, I reached over and grabbed my Bible... I figured I would spend a minute or two reading through it. I bumped it on something and dropped it on my desk, and this is the chapter and verses it opened to:

PSALM Chapter 1

1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

This morning, these verses hit home for me. I figured I would share- maybe there are a few more of you who need that reminder. There are two ways we can go in our lives, two paths- and we do not always choose the right one, that is for sure. I know that I don't. But the Psalmist reminds us that the more time we spend in the Word of God, the more assurance we have of His presence in our daily lives. We need to surround ourselves with those who are encouraging, and we need to surround ourselves with the encouragement we can get from scripture. It is a good way to start the day.

This year, the 4th grade students decided instead of exchanging gifts in our class, we would get a "name" of a child from an Angel Tree and buy that child a gift. Today, we got our kid- a ten year old girl who apparently really likes Justin Bieber. I would like to ask that each family donate money so that we can go and buy a gift for this little girl. We need to have the gift turned in by Dec. 19th, so if you could have the money turned in by Tuesday, Dec. 13th, that would be great! Thanks everyone!

I have been thinking a lot about family these past few days. The holidays are approaching, and I have been missing my younger brothers, and I am looking forward to (hopefully) seeing them and their families in the next few weeks.

It hasn't always been that way. I have told the 4th graders some stories about how well my brothers and I really got along while we were growing up. There was quite a few incidents that ended up with something broken and someone bleeding, that is for sure- incidents, I am sure, that my mother would really appreciate I not post online for all to read. There have been several discussions in class about our families, and more specifically, our siblings. Many times, we don't say things that are too nice about our brothers or sisters, because they are annoying, or they pick on us, or they get us in trouble. But, when all is said and done, we know we can count on our brothers and sisters more than anyone else. There are also some stories told in class of siblings protecting each other, standing up for each other, and even being nice to each other. We may complain about them, but we know our brothers and sisters love us, and we them.

Joab was David's nephew and the commander of David's army, and in these verses, he is leading the army out to fight the Ammonites and Arameans, who are threatening to attack some of David's men. Before battle, Joab says these words to his brother, Abishai, "If the Arameans are to strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God."

It is a good example of how brothers can stand up for each other, and stand beside one another. There are times when family members need to stick together, because sometimes your family is all you have on your side. Joab knew that God was on his side, but he also knew that he had his brother standing beside him, ready to fight for him and with him and maybe even die with him.

Even today, we can learn from Joab and his brother. As Christians, we face many challenges, both kids and adults. We face temptation, we face pressure to give in to what our peers want us to do, and many other difficulties. How much easier these challenges are when we have a fellow Christian standing with us, beside us, supporting us. So, as we talked about this morning in 4th grade, let's stick together!

This morning, we talked about what today means. Many of the students shared some stories about those in their families who have served or continue to serve our country.

My family is full of people who have served in the military... my brother, my brother-in-law, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc. I am so proud of them, and proud of the sacrifices they have made and continue to make in service of our country.

I encouraged all the fourth graders to call or go see the Vets that they know and personally say "thank you" to each of them. It is because of these people that we get to live in freedom and safety.

Thank you to ALL members of the United States Armed Forces.

Tomorrow, Friday, I am headed to the hospital in Indianapolis, where they will be removing my stone, one way or another. After that, I will be on the road to recovery. The pain comes and goes right now, but I am going to be glad when they remove the kidney stone. Please keep me, and my family, in your prayers over the next couple of days as we finish this process up. It is funny how something that starts so minor can end up being much more difficult. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support! I am anxious to be done with this and back at school with my students. Believe it or not, I miss them... well, at least a little :-)

What's the deal with Mr. H?

Hi everyone! I am sitting at my desk in our classroom for a few minutes today, trying to get caught up on a few things. I will not be here for long, but I thought I would let everyone know what is going on. Last week on Monday, as we were preparing to leave for Indianapolis for our teacher's conference, I started to have severe pain in my side. My fellow teachers dropped me off at the ER in Seymour, where it was discovered that I had a kidney stone. After a few days of waiting for it to pass on its own, it was decided that the docs were going to go in and get it because my kidney was not functioning properly due to the blockage. But, when they did so, they discovered that I have a lot of scar tissue build up (probably from my radiation treatments for cancer a while ago) and they were unable to get it out. They put in a stent to help my kidney begin functioning properly again, which helped. I am headed to Indianapolis tomorrow to see a specialist about what the next step should be. I am still in some pain, but it is minor compared to the pain I was feeling early last week (docs said pain was probably due to blockage and kidney swelling). So, after tomorrow, we should have more information.

There you have it! Thank you all so much for your prayers! I hope to be back in school on Wednesday.

Please arrive at school NO LATER THAN 6:45… the bus WILL be leaving at approximately 6:55
Please bring a sack lunch… no lunchboxes or coolers, we would like to be able to throw everything away.
We have a few parents who are providing snacks for the ride there AND the ride home. If anyone else wants to send some drinks/snacks please let me know.
Apparently, Friday is supposed to be almost 80 degrees and sunny so dress accordingly!
For the first part of the day, we will be together as a class… later in the afternoon, we will divide up by group.

My heart is troubled today. There are many things on my mind. Much of my "troubled heart" comes from anxiety about things I have no control over. But, I know someone who does have control. And I need to learn to trust in Him for all things... He has a plan. And although I may not understand His plan, and although the ultimate goals are not clear to me, I have to trust that God knows what is best for me, for my family, for my class, for our lives.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Psalm 63: 6-8

On my bed, I remember you;

your right hand upholds me.

It is interesting how God reminds us of things, even when we are not seeking a reminder. This time of year, we are in full swing here at LC. Sports, school, and all the other activities at our churches take up a lot of our time. Often times, we can feel overwhelmed with the amount of "stuff" we have to do. Sometimes, this leads to many sleepless nights... I know that happens to me! I lay there, staring at the ceiling, thinking about all the things I have to do tomorrow, thinking about school, about volleyball, about my family, about everything. It can make for long nights and long days, especially if we try and rely on our own strength to get us through. This morning, while I was still thinking about all the things I have to do, I opened my Bible to look at something for Religion class, and it fell open to this Psalm. A reminder for me, that I thought I would share with you. Instead of laying awake in bed, worrying, put your trust in God, put your worries on Him, and He will give you rest. "My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me." Cling to God... He doesn't worry, and He's got it under control. He can hold you up so you can accomplish all the things He needs you to accomplish every day, every week, and every school year. Have a great day... and sleep well...

⁵⁴ Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. ⁵⁵ And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. ⁵⁶ A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” ⁵⁷ But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
⁵⁸ A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
⁵⁹ About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”
⁶⁰ Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. ⁶¹ The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” ⁶² And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The verse in this section that stands out the most, to me anyway, is the last verse of the passage. Verse 62 says these 7 words, "And he went outside and wept bitterly." Sometimes, when we read the Bible, we do not pay attention to the men and women that the verses mention. We focus on the important parts, and rightly so, but sometimes we forget that the people in the accounts were actual people. They were not just some character in a story to teach us a lesson. Certainly there are lessons to be learned, but these lessons come from the experiences of the people who were there. Peter was a man. He probably considered Jesus to be his best friend. And in these verses, we read about how Peter not only denied that he knew his friend, Jesus, he also denied that he knew Jesus, his Lord. His sorrow and pain comes from both of those things. Peter made a promise to his Savior and his friend that he would never turn away from their friendship, and he would never turn away from his faith. But, in that moment, that night in the courtyard, Peter did just that. He wept because he realized what he had done. He did something any of us would have done, something that we all understand. Have you ever betrayed a friend? Have you ever not stood up for something in which you very strongly believe? Have you ever denied your faith?

Think about this... Did Jesus forgive Peter? Are we forgiven? We may turn our back on Jesus, but he will not turn his back on us.

Field Trip

More information about our upcoming field trip to Conner Prairie. We will be attending the Woodland Indians program from 9:30-1:30 on that day, and then we will also spend some time exploring the park. We will leave the park around 3:30 on that day, which means we will not get back to school until around 5:30. The cost of the trip will be around 15 dollars per student, and will be 18 dollars for chaperones. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know! Thanks all!

I will let you know about the cost as soon as possible, but it will probably be about the same as it has been for the past few years. Note about homework

I wanted to let everyone know that the amount of homework will slightly increase during this week to the level it will be throughout the year. As I stated during our parent meetings at the beginning of the school year, I will give time in class to do homework, but sometimes that amount of time will be limited. We need to work on getting ourselves all the way on schedule and starting this week, we will. That means that the amount of time we spend working on our assignments will decrease. Please remember that the amount of homework each night will vary based on the time allowed during the day to work on it. I try to give about the same amount every day, but there will be some days when there is more, and some days when it is less. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. 4th Grade Chapel Offerings

This year, the 4th grade class has decided that our Chapel offerings for the 2011-2012 school year will be donated to two places- The Epilepsy Foundation and Riley Hospital for Children.

We have set a goal to reach... we will try and raise 450 dollars this school year to be divided between these two places.

If that goal is reached, there will be a reward of some kind... more info to come!

FIELD TRIP

So, it is official... the Fourth Grade class will be going to Conner Prairie on October 7th, 2011. We will be leaving school that day BEFORE school starts and we will not return on time to ride the buses home, so arrangements will have to be made. We will be leaving school around 6:45 a.m. There will be more information to come.

A few things for you all...

1. Sorry about the font of the "Classroom Rules" I am not sure if it was just my computer, or if it was an all-around error. I could not read the rules because the font... well, was weird. I fixed it now.
2. I will assign memory today, fyi.
3. I forgot to give the students a list of Spelling words on Friday... with all that was going on, we didn't have time to go over it. We will have our Spelling pretest tomorrow.
4. After we finish with our pretests and benchmarks, we will start regular class this week!

Well, we are still more than a month away from fourth grade, but I thought I would update the blog, just in case a few of you are looking at it. (If you are, please spread the word, because we will be using this blog throughout the school year).

I hope you are all enjoying the summer! I certainly am. I have been able to spend a lot of time with my family this summer, which is one of my favorite things to do.

How is everyone doing these first few weeks of summer? What have you been up to? I've been busy working and spending time with my family. I am hoping to do a lot more of that this summer. Why don't you post a comment below and let me know what kinds of things you are up to this summer.
